FLORIDA'S DEADLINE FOR UST TRAINING FAST APPROACHING

The State of Florida revised Chapter 62-761 Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.) to require all owner/operators of underground storage tanks (USTs) to have designated and trained operators by August 6, 2015.

As of August 7, 2014, the training program must meet the Florida requirements specified in Rule 62-761.350, F.A.C. Training certificates issued from other states will not be accepted in Florida after August 6, 2015.

Having the specific knowledge of how to respond to an emergency situation can make a big difference at your facility. The UST training program is broken down into three classes:

  • Class A training is required for person(s) having primary responsibility for on-site operation and maintenance of UST systems (owner or operator of a UST facility).
  • Class B training is required for persons involved with daily on-site operation and maintenance of UST systems.
  • Class C training is required for daily on-site employees having primary responsibility for addressing emergencies presented by a spill or release from a UST system.

There are other reasons than just fulfilling the legal requirement to complete the requisite training.  A good training program will provide a safer environment for your employees and customers, prepare operators for a rapid response to alarms and emergencies which limit property and environmental damage, and provide a solid base of knowledge to develop a compliance program to reduce the frequency of incidents in the future.
